Mindshare Presents "Science Meets Art"
at Cross Campus Santa Monica

Science and art both are both dedicated to the quest for truth yet they tend to employ very different methodologies in the pursuit of this goal. Yet it's at their intersection that some of the most remarkable discoveries get made. It has appeared through the ages in the sketchbooks of Leonardo da Vinci to the geodesic domes of Buckminster Fuller. From the spirals of distant galaxies to the microscopic realms of the nanoscale, the intersection of science and art has long been a fertile domain for inspiration, creativity and expression.

Join us as we explore a handful of projects going on around Los Angeles that help us further understand ourselves and the world around us. The evening will gather three presenters, music and other surprises!

The Intersection of Art & Science

Mick Lorusso / @uclartsci
Exhibition Coordinator, UCLA Art|Sci Gallery

Mick Lorusso is an interdisciplinary artist who coordinates exhibitions and workshops at the ART|SCI Gallery. He has lived and exhibited in Mexico, Germany and throughout the western United States. In his work, he combines scientific research, intuition, and natural observation through drawing, painting, sculpture, installation and interactions, building imaginaries that often present microorganisms and molecules as active participants and performers intertwined with human life and ecology. Lorusso has participated as a resident in various interdisciplinary art programs, including ArtMill (Prague, Czech Republic) PLAND / ISEA 2012: Machine Wildnerness (Taos, NM, USA), Colorado Art Ranch (Paonia, CO, USA), and Make Art with Purpose 2013 (Dallas, TX, USA). He received an honorary mention in the Prix Ars Electronica 2013 for his work with electricity-producing bacteria entitled “Microbial Schöppingen”, which he produced at the Kraftwerk Künstlerdorf residency in Schöppingen, Germany with the guidance of scientists from LabMET in Ghent, Belgium. His current project "Museum of Endoluminosity" involves recent research with nanodiamonds in the treatment of cancer being conducted the laboratories of Dr. James Gimzewski and Dr. Dean Ho at UCLA.

The Portrait of the Scientist as a Young Artist

Dennis Callahan PH.D. / @DennisMichaelJr
Post-Doc, Materials Science, Caltech

Science and mathematics have the unique opportunity to create novel works of art that no one else can, from whole a system of generative art that grows itself, down to micrography that captures images of the tiniest things on Earth. The emergence and rapid development of technology that is allowing whole new art mediums to pop up as quickly as we can blog about them. But scientists are of the privileged few who can make use of these devices, in labs and universities, that create beautiful works that are left under microscopes, and hence underrappreciated by most. Callahan asks us to consider the beauty of science as an artform all its own.

Dennis is a Post Doc in Materials Science at the California Institute of Technology, where he studies the microstructure of solar cells. He has achieved local and national recognition for his many types of stunning scientific art. In his spare time Dennis is an amateur photographer and musician. He also experiments with generative art, which is an art form at the intersection of abstract drawing and computer programming in which artistic works are created with a computer through the use of human designed algorithms.
